At the height of the U.S. housing boom, when building materials were in short supply, American companies used millions of pounds of Chinese made drywall. In late 2008, the State of Florida became aware of an unusual problem with premature corrosion of copper and other metal parts in their residences. Despite trying to replace corroded parts over and over, the homeowners literally watched the corrosion eat away at their property and, when they learned that it might have been associated with the presence of Chinese-made drywall in their home, became concerned that their own home might also be a potential health hazard. Hundreds of businesses, public buildings, homeowners and apartment dwellers are concerned that the wallboard gives off fumes that can corrode copper pipes, blacken jewelry and silverware, and possibly sicken people. The drywall may have been used in more than 100,000 homes, according to some estimates, including houses rebuilt after the recent hurricanes. The state of Florida Department of Health has a case definition for premature copper corrosion in residences possibly associated with the presence of imported drywall from China. Florida DOH advises the public to hire Florida licensed contractor(s) to perform the remediation. DOH is not currently aware of any proven and effective treatment method other than removal and replacement of the suspected or known source material.
